From Training to Transformation: How MOM Foundation and SAF Are Advancing Climate-Smart Agriculture in Ghana

In line with its commitment to sustainable development, Mother of Many (MOM) Foundation partnered with Sidiq Agri-Firm (SAF) to deliver a certified agricultural training programme for interested adults in Ghana.

The programme was designed to introduce participants to modern, climate-smart agricultural systems, with a strong emphasis on greenhouse farming and aquaponics. Beyond explaining what these systems are, the training explored why they matter—particularly in the context of food security, climate variability, and youth unemployment—and how they can serve as viable, income-generating ventures.

Participants were taken through both theoretical foundations and hands-on practice, including system setup, crop management, and planting. The practical components were central to the training’s success, allowing participants to witness the full production cycle and the tangible results of applying climate-smart methods effectively.

The outcomes of this programme reinforced a key insight: agriculture, when approached with innovation and intentionality, can be both sustainable and economically rewarding.

From Experience to Expanded Vision

Building on the lessons and successes of the initial adult-focused training, MOM Foundation and Sidiq Agri-Firm strengthened their ongoing partnership to explore ways of extending similar agricultural value to younger populations and educational institutions. This shared vision led to the development of the GreenSprout Initiative, an agriculture-focused intervention under MOM Foundation’s PROJECT GHANA framework.

Since 2012, PROJECT GHANA has supported deprived schools across the country through the donation of educational resources such as laboratory equipment, computers, books, and classroom furniture. GreenSprout represents a strategic evolution of this work—placing practical skills, food production, and environmental sustainability at the centre of educational support.

About the GreenSprout Initiative

The GreenSprout Initiative is a youth-centred, climate-smart agriculture programme designed to complement formal agricultural education with practical, real-world exposure.

At its core, the initiative seeks to:

  • Bridge the gap between classroom-based agricultural science and hands-on farming experience

  • Reposition agriculture as a modern, innovative, and viable career pathway for young people

  • Contribute to food security through the cultivation of fresh produce using climate-resilient methods

The initiative is structured around the establishment of school-based agricultural demonstration projects, which serve as learning sites for students while modelling sustainable farming practices that can be adapted beyond the school environment.

GreenSprout adopts a demonstration-led approach, using climate-smart techniques to showcase how crops—particularly commonly consumed vegetables—can be grown efficiently, responsibly, and at scale.

The focus is not limited to production alone. Equal attention is given to:

  • Climate-smart agricultural principles

  • Sustainable land and water use

  • Agripreneurship and value-chain thinking

  • Practical farm management skills

By combining these elements, the initiative aims to cultivate both technical competence and entrepreneurial awareness among participants.

Through GreenSprout, MOM Foundation and Sidiq Agri-Firm seek to contribute to:

  • Stronger experiential learning within agricultural science education

  • Increased interest among young people in agriculture, agribusiness, and agri-innovation

  • Scalable models that can inform similar interventions across Ghana

  • Broader conversations around food security, climate resilience, and youth employment

A Partnership Rooted in Purpose

The collaboration between MOM Foundation and Sidiq Agri-Firm reflects a shared commitment to thoughtful, impact-driven development—one that prioritises sustainability, education, and long-term value over short-term solutions.

Rather than viewing agriculture solely as a means of production, this partnership approaches it as a tool for capacity building, systems thinking, and national development. The GreenSprout Initiative stands as one expression of that approach, with the potential to grow through collaboration with schools, development partners, government agencies, and other stakeholders aligned with its vision.
